The Science and Art of Delayed Gratification

I like my marshmallows golden brown and gooey inside.

I am not a financial wizard and certainly no expert in the area of investing.    No, the real driver of our modest success in growing net worth comes down to one simple behavior.

We are millionaires because we have mastered learned the art of delayed gratification – And You Can Too!

A person’s ability to put off a reward for the promise of receiving an even bigger reward in the future is known as delayed gratification.  It is not difficult to understand why this skill is extremely important in the context of building wealth and achieving financial independence.… Continue reading

What’s a day worth to you?

Tiananmen Square Beijing- Entrance to the Forbidden City.

My marathon of travel has continued through May. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being an engineer is having the opportunity to solve problems. As I have moved up the ranks in my company, opportunities to personally lead difficult problem solving activities has decreased significantly, but on rare occasions, when the problem has large financial or customer implications, I get tapped on the shoulder to do my thing. I originally traveled to Beijing for a quick three day stop to check-in on my team who was already on the ground troubleshooting the issue.… Continue reading

Wealth Building and Weight Loss – Zero Style

Today I am going to reveal a magic system that, if followed, will enable you to build financial wealth and lose weight!  Does that sound good?  You betcha!

Full disclosure, the inspiration for this post came from a recent post on Club Thrifty that struck a nerve for me.  The author (who writes some pretty good stuff by the way), was arguing that the 50/20/30 budget that many advertise as being a great tool for beginners was not such great advice.  I have to say that I agree 100%.

The 50/20/30 budget is a guideline of how to allocate your income.  … Continue reading

Zero to a million dollars in 8 years

Predictable, I know, but I couldn’t help myself.

On February 25, 2017 the Zeroes achieved a milestone that seemed impossible just eight short years ago.  In fact, it was such an impossibility, that I am quite sure the idea of having a net worth of a million dollars only crossed my mind in the context of winning the lottery.  In 2009 our net worth had just crossed into the black.  That felt really good, but  I had no reason to believe we could build this kind of wealth on $65K of post tax earnings.  … Continue reading

Why I drive a scooter to work

Don’t knock them until you try them. They are good, I promise.

Within 3 months of living in Asia I had made two purchases that I never envisioned making.  First purchase was a life time supply of those Fish Peanuts with chilies and dried seaweed you can find in every 7-11 in these parts.  Ok, just kidding, I didn’t buy a life time supply, but I have bought several industrial sized boxes of what might be the best beer snack ever invented.  YES, I am serious.  These little snacks are packed full of all the good stuff – carbs, protein, salt, yadadada, etc…  And did I mention they are great with beer?… Continue reading
